Occult Rabbit Cutaway

I really like occult and medieval inspired art as well as rabbits. I thought it would be an interesting juxtaposition to have rabbits which are cute and fluffy, doing weird occult things. I thought it would also be interesting to have these kinds of scary rabbits living inside this cute one. I feel like this represents me as I am perceived as very sweet and friendly, which I am, but I also feel very weird and like things that aren’t usually associated with the cute, pink, fluffy personality. I probably have autism, but I can’t afford to get screened so it’s still just a possibility. I feel like this makes me feel different and makes it hard to relate to other people. I feel like I need to wear this sweet mask to not overwhelm new people when I meet them.
For this project I used a lot of work from Remidios Varo. I wrote about being inspired by her art in my inspiration essay and that made me want to use her work in this project. I enjoy how she draws rooms and creates a space that feels three dimensional. I also wanted to use the inking style of a medieval woodblock. I didn’t end up following that exact style as I used a gray pen to add more detail to give the work slightly more depth so I wouldn’t have to worry about line weight all the time.
Each room has a different inspiration and organ attached to it. The top left room represents the lung and the rabbits are playing Light as a Feather, Stiff as a Board, a magical game where you chant “light as a feather, stiff as a board” while attempting to lift someone with just your fingers to make them levitate. The top right room represents the heart and the rabbit is posed naked on a chaise lounge. The heart in the media is a representation of love and romance so I made a very open figure. Love feels very vulnerable, and so does being naked so I combined the two. The bottom right room is the stomach and the rabbit in that room is a ballet dancer. I did dance as a child and have always admired ballet dancers. The reference I had for the pose of the dancer is from Rite of Spring, a very stompy ballet. I thought it would be funny to have a dancer in the stomach as any emotion/feeling you would feel from your stomach feels almost like someone is doing ballet inside of it. The bottom left room is the potion room and is placed where the liver would be. The liver is a filter for the body and I thought it would be interesting to have an alchemist creating potions where your body would be filtering everything. The twisty ladder in the middle is representing the spine. It was originally meant to be a spiral staircase, however it did not turn out the way I intended and I thought a ladder would also be visually appealing. Overall this piece was challenging for me and I am very proud of it and what it represents.
